Mapping Māori Place-Names

The New Zealand Herald has created an interactive map which colors house names depending on whether they are English linguistic communication or Māori. The Our Place Names map reveals that North Island is dominated by Māori names in addition to South Island is dominated past times English linguistic communication place-names.

The map is made using information from Te Pūnaha Matatini, Dragonfly Data Science in addition to Te Hiku Media. They used algorithms to position Māori words inwards the New Zealand Gazetteer of place-names. If you lot hover over a place-name on the map you lot tin dismiss persuasion the actual name.

Unfortunately the New Zealand Herald don't convey whatever theories near why at that topographic point is such a clear deviation betwixt the 2 islands. It would live on interesting to know why North Island has far to a greater extent than Māori names than South Island.
